IC Information;
Character Name; Nicholas St. North
Canon; Rise of the Guardians
Canon Point; Post-Movie
Age; Old, old, old.  While he may be younger than a few of his fellow Guardians (i.e. Sandy), North is at the very least centuries old. Based on the film, North has the appearance of an old man (50? 60? 70?), and his past history as a Guardian places him all the way back in the Dark Ages. Seriously, look at the beard. The man has got some years on him.

House; Odin
Power; Ice

Although exuberant in personality and even childish at times, ultimately North's main focus centers around using his wisdom to aid others. He is a leader, an inventor, an insightful ear to lend during problems (for example, his relationship with Jack), and (above all else) a man whose job it is open others eyes to all of the wonder in the world around them. Despite being a warrior with a heart of gold, North is the type of person you go to for reassurance and advice.

Personality;(Note: Due to differences within canon, I will be primarily focusing on the film and official film sources such as interviews, storyboard artists, etc. If it isn't covered first by the movie, then I start drawing from the book series (especially for North's early years.))

This is the man you have most likely heard of since your childhood. You have grown up to tales of reindeer flying through the night sky while pulling a large red sleigh. You have dreamed of a factory hidden within the snow where thousands of elves spend each day crafting toys. This is the man you may have hoped to catch a glimpse of one very special night as he climbed through chimneys and delivered gifts to all the good little children. He is known by many names: Kris Kringle, Saint Nicholas, Father Christmas, etc. You know him as the legendary figure – Santa Claus.

What you didn't know? This Santa is also a sword-wielding, tattoo bearing, former bandit with a thick Russian accent. Oh and the yetis are the guys who make the toys, not the elves.

Needless to say, Nicholas St. North may indeed be the one and only Santa Claus but he is far from the conventional idea of this Christmas spirit. There is much more to his character than a kind old man with a firm love of cookies, milk, toys and children. Luckily, North's matryoshka doll (his own creation) helps shed some light on the inner workings of our dear North.

Like the first level of the doll, the very first three words a person can describe North are “very big, intimidating.” This statement isn't true simply because of North's stature (though the man truly does have an impressive size to him). Rather it is the way North acts and carries himself that leads people to jump at first glance. Rise of the Guardians' official site claims that “everything about him is larger than life.” This really does say a lot about him. North is not the kind of man that does anything half-way. He doesn't merely talk; he is waving his arms around as he tells a story. He doesn't point; he nearly slices you with a sword when he gets an idea. He doesn't discuss, he is marching toward you until your back is against the door. He doesn't chuckle; his laughter is booming across the room. For North, his enthusiasm and strong feelings bleeds into action. He'll behave in an over-the-top manner with or without consent and respect for personal space. All in all – this paints a pretty overwhelming picture.

In addition, North adds another level of intimidation (albeit probably unintentionally) by possessing this quality – he is a leader. You know that one boss who is always walking through the halls, checking on everyone else and telling you to redo the whole thing if he doesn't like it? This is that guy. North has spent centuries as the leader of his workshop – supervising the yetis and elves while crafting millions of toys for children all over the world every single year. This feat requires a great deal of dedication and more than a little forcefulness. North isn't afraid to take charge of any situation. When something goes wrong, he's already on his feet trying to figure out what to do next. In general, North is used to making decisions and usually goes through with it. Whether a person always agrees with it however is another story. Despite his good intentions, kidnapping someone into a grand ceremony with loud music and fire might come off as a little too strong for a bystander.

On the other hand, it is truly difficult to feel intimidated by North when he is a downright jolly Guardian. The myth did not lie with this part. Unless the moment is serious or dangerous, it is relatively hard to put him off his good mood. North is a generally happy person – he is content with his life, laughs easily, and doesn't stay angry for too long if you manage to irritate him. (Unless you're an enemy of course. Then you get the full brunt of his fury). He is able to compete and tease his friends in a good natured type of fashion: from cheating at a tooth race to placing a nervous friend into a high speed sleigh ride. If you manage to one up him (and let's be honest, the man is asking for it sometimes), he's also capable at laughing at himself as well. Basically, North is more similar to a gigantic teddy bear than a grizzly bear when he is in good spirits.

North is also a mysterious character at certain points. For the rest of the world, North can be a little secretive. His home is hidden away in the North Pole and hard to access due to a security team of yetis. No one but Guardians, invited guests, and unfortunately Pitch really know the inside of the workshop. As a result, much of what makes North who he is (North's appearance, his home, who makes the toys, his sleigh) exist only in myth similar to other legends unless North chooses to tell or show them. And that's not including his life BEFORE he was a Guardian.

The next level of the Nesting doll is fearless. North is pretty much a badass in this department. He's a swords master and utterly willing to prove it. When his friends or the children are in danger, he easily jumps into the fray and starts slicing through his foes. He has been a fighter for almost all of his life and isn't afraid to charge in while using whatever terrain to his advantage. For instance, he didn't think twice about handing over the reigns of his sleigh to someone who never rode it previously and standing on top of it to fight nightmares. Honestly, the man can almost be considered too reckless if not for the fact that he IS capable of watching his surroundings and holding back until the proper moment. In Rise of the Guardians, Pitch Black is North's enemy and a very dangerous threat to the Guardians. North could have reacted with righteous fury like Tooth or snapped with words like Bunny. Instead, North is oddly quiet throughout their exchanges and most of their interactions consist only of physically fighting each other until near the end of the film. Why? It wasn't needed. Tooth and Bunny were more than capable of handling themselves and it was probably a better idea to keep track of the guy that likes disappearing into the shadows. Thus, North is capable of being fearless while still using his head.

On a non-conflict related note, you could easily see North's fearlessness from his uh rather interesting choice in activities. North has a preference for a rush of high speed adrenaline and excitement in his actions. Let's be honest here – there is little reason for driving the sleigh that fast and adding several loop de loops to the exit. He carves ice and had a whole workshop built into the North Pole. He could have easily included a straight ramp for the sleigh. The loop de loops? They were left for North's amusement. The man is definitely not afraid of thrill rides or risking the lives of his friends a tad in order to avoid the confines of a silly thing like a seatbelt.

Yet, one of the most important aspects of North's personality is his ability to care. Remember the “kind old man with a firm love of cookies, milk, toys and children” point mentioned earlier? This is the origin of that part of the myth. North has a very genuine love for others. He has dedicated the rest of his immortal life to watching over the children and bringing them joy. He cares about his workers – the trustworthy yetis and well-meaning but troublesome elves. Although he might not always show it in the best manner, he also truly loves the other Guardians and wants to look out for them. For North, family, friendship, love, trust and caring was not something inherited (living as a bandit for most of your human life had its consequences) but something learned and wonderfully appreciated over time. As a result, North believes in these values whole-heartedly and demonstrates them to others – even people he just met. Father Christmas is a pretty accurate title in this regard. North is perfectly willing to lend an ear to problems, offer advice, reassure and give comfort to someone in need. He can believe in you when even you doubt yourself. He can demonstrate affection (a hand on your shoulder, a hug) almost a little too freely. North is also a pretty wise man and shares that knowledge with others. His talks with Jack Frost about his center and after Sandy are excellent examples. Generally, North is a very loving person and the kind you want to talk to on a bad day.

Finally, at the center of this matryoshka doll is...a tiny wooden baby. OK, no, not really. The very core of North's being, the reason for North's very existence as a spirit, is wonder. North has always been able to see the world a little differently than others. To you, the street outside might just be an empty street. North however sees the magic in the air, the soft glow of lights from the trees in the windows, the singing carols mingling with the sweet sound of a child's laughter, the gentle snowfall promising a white Christmas to all. He has always been able to see the wonder, the awe-inspiring marvel of every little thing in the world around them. For North, these tiny miracles are a thing of true beauty. North's job as a Guardian and frankly his honest wish is to open the children's eyes to this wonder, share it and place more of it into the world. He carries out this role by using his skills as an inventor to try to present this beauty in the gifts he leaves on Christmas morning. When a child runs to the tree and opens the present in astonishment, North's duty is then to protect that special feeling within the children. In essence, Santa Claus was born with the ability to see wonder and teach this emotion to others.

Unfortunately, there is a downside to Nicholas St. North. Although he cares about others very deeply, North can be surprisingly oblivious, slightly dismissive, and even out of touch at the worst of times. To be fair, it isn't intentionally malicious. North has a very large job and, as a result, has a problematic habit of allowing himself to be too fixed on his work. While that means great for Christmas, it also makes North sometimes rather oblivious to the world around him and the reactions of other people. How else can you explain how North can apparently miss someone trying to break into his own home not once but several times? Furthermore, yes North. Stuffing someone into a magic sack, tossing them through a portal without warning, giving them a surprise ceremony, telling them they are going to be a Guardian and ignoring their protests is a surefire way of recruiting a new member. How can North be surprised when the first answer is no? Sadly, North can also be a little dismissive when he doesn't notice a person is genuinely upset at certain times. He is a very confident individual and proud of his role. What might seem to be a problem to one person, North might not see as a difficulty at all. Thus, he may not sometimes see things in the same light or be as fully worried as the other. (“It's just eggs Bunny.”) Finally, he's out of date when it comes to interacting with children. Due to his overworking, North has somehow missed the whole point of his duty – the children. Prior to the film, North hasn't actually spent any time with a real child in ages. He has grown distant to them and is now rusty in how to interact with them. Thankfully, events in the film have taught him this lesson once more but it is still a work in progress.

He also has a bit of a temper. Nowhere near enough to cause too much damage unless the offense is serious but he may snap and talk loudly if frustrated.

This is Nicholas St. North. They never taught you any of this in your “Santa Claus is coming to town” jingle.

[Sorry Asgard. The network is being treated to a rather odd series of events. A video message had flipped on....and then almost immediately turned off – leaving everyone with just a vague impression of something big and red. Afterward, a voice message opens up.]

Hmm. No. That is not right. I think – ah! Here!

[And goodbye voice message. Finally, a video pops open again. A large red man with a long white beard and a red coat looks like he's still oddly fiddling with the screen. The screen is moved a little to the left and he's muttering.]

Yes! Yes. This is...little strange. Hmm...How did they – If I could find way to add to globe, it could be better backup for northern lights if I- [Oh. North moves the screen back. He's noticed it's still on. A wide smile starts appearing on his face.]

Ha ha! There we are. Hello to all of my fellow travelers! I have just arrived to this place as well. Could do with more color but no matter. [Sheepish shrug for a moment as he scratches hand against head.] Uh...I am sorry about earlier. I have never quite seen such device in my home. I wonder if I-

[Cough.] Ah. Another time. Now! Back to business. My name is North. Though I do not know if you have heard my other names – in my world, I have also been called Santa Claus. It was and still is my duty as a Guardian to watch over the children. I know it is difficult being pulled so far away but the children are innocent and have also been dragged into war.

I am going to continue this task. But! I have something to ask.

I have been told of the lack of Christmas in this city. For any who do not know, it is my holiday. I create and deliver toys and gifts to young children in single night. I would like to continue to do this but uh...surprise call from Gods leaves me with no supplies.

So! If there is anyone with material or tools, I would be most grateful for any assistance. Of course, festivities not limited only to children. I will be working on other surprises. This Christmas will be epic!
